Better days are coming – they’re called Saturday and Sunday.
We don’t know about you, but to us, there may be no sweeter word in the English language than “weekend”. For many working Americans, the weekend offers a chance to get some much needed rest, relaxation, and rejuvenation. However, a surefire way to ruin that “financial diet” of yours is to abandon all sense of discipline and self-control outside of your work week. You work so hard during the week to watch your spending, maximize your savings, and optimize that budget …don’t blow all of your hard work on a few short hours of fun!
Below, we’ve compiled ten of our favorite ways to enjoy your weekend for free. So, before you go making those weekend plans, see if you can try a few of these suggestions below! A little fun + minimal impact on that budget? Sounds like a win-win to us!
1. Visit a free museum
Did you know that many art museums are free and open to the public? Find one in your area and commit the day to exploring the fascinating masterpieces right in front of you.
2. Go on a photo hunt
Have you ever stopped and admired the beauty in your immediate surroundings or in your local area? Dig up your old camera or simply use the one on your phone to capture some of the beautiful scenery or landscape in your neck of the woods. You don’t have to be a professional photographer to appreciate the simplicity and beauty of everyday life.
3. Pick up a new book
Dust off your library card and peruse the latest collection of bestsellers. Getting lost in a book can be just what the doctor ordered. Pick up a great beach read for your spring vacation!
4. Plant a garden
Sure, a few packets of seeds might cost you initially, but having a collection of home-grown vegetables and flowers is sure to bring you happiness (and food!) all season long. Scope out your future garden patch this weekend and get ready to embrace your newfound green thumb!
5. Volunteer
Have a few hours to spare this weekend? Pack the kids into the car and partake in a volunteer activity. Check your local newspaper or community website for activities you can all participate in while helping make your community a better place for all.
6. Go for a walk or bike ride to a new park
Do you always gravitate towards the same spots? Mix it up this weekend by taking a walk or riding your bike to a new park or playground. Your kids (or furry friends) will love the adventure and chances are good that you could use a change of scenery.
7. Sort through home videos and old photo albums
Looking through reminders of the past can be so fun and rejuvenating. Find your box of mementos, home videos, old photos, and other treasures and relish in the memories. Relive those funny stories and reminisce with your family or friends. Sometimes a look into your past can provide some much-needed perspective and clarity for your future.
8. Organize your cabinets
Okay, this one doesn’t sound so fun, we admit, but imagine how much better you’ll feel after you declutter that junk drawer and rearrange those spices. If you spend as much time in your kitchen as we do, it’s likely it could use a makeover of sorts. Put on a fun playlist and get to work!
9. Host a game night
In our house, we usually only dig out the board games when the weather is dreary or long after our kids have gone to bed. This weekend, involve the whole family and/or invite over some friends for some friendly competition! Who doesn’t love a quick game of cards or playing with all of that Monopoly money? Better still – host a game night with your friends and make it BYOG (Bring Your Own Game).
10. Take a moment to RELAX!
Life has a way of moving oh so quickly, doesn’t it? Take a moment this weekend to just relax and reflect. Maybe dig out a face mask you haven’t used yet or make your own! Unwind, decompress, de-stress, and get ready for the week ahead.
