It’s true! That amount is HALF of the amount you could be putting away in an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) for the year.
To save a few dollars this year while still dining out and enjoying your favorite spots, try some of our favorite tips:
Get it to go!
You’ll save money on gratuity and avoid the temptation to splurge or indulge in that extra glass of wine or dessert. Sure, these things are enjoyable from time to time, but if you can skip these “treats”, you just might end up saving yourself $10-$15!
Go early
Still wanting to dine out but not so willing to pay full menu price? Try dining early to take advantage of happy hour specials. Most restaurants offer a pretty compelling happy hour menu full of your favorite items at a discount. Enjoy your favorites and save!
Skip the alcohol
Most restaurants charge a hefty markup on bottles of wine and those fancy cocktails. Unless that glass of pinot is on the happy hour menu, perhaps opt for a sweet tea or drink with free refills instead.
Go halfsies
Share your meal with a friend or partner. Restaurant portions typically are larger than what you’d prepare for yourself at home. Order your “go-to” comfort meal and split it to save!
Go halfsies…with yourself!
Instead of filling up on your larger portion at the restaurant, consider taking half of it to go. Leftovers are a great way to make the meal go farther and still enjoy a delicious meal the next day!
Join the restaurant’s email list or loyalty club
Most national chains offer birthday coupons or other fun discounts throughout the year. Be sure you’re on their list to stay informed of great deals and consider joining their loyalty program to accumulate rewards for your spending.
Use gift cards
Before you dine out, it is worth a quick visit to Restaurants.com to see if you can purchase a discounted gift card to the establishment of your choice. They have a pretty wide selection so be sure to check out their options in advance of your planned outing.
Familiarize yourself with specials
Pay attention to the daily or weekly specials at your local spots. Many restaurants or cafes offer fun specials throughout the week (looking at you, Taco Tuesday!) so make sure you check online or view their social media accounts in advance to learn of any upcoming deals.
Skip the appetizer
Appetizers, like alcohol, are those sneaky portions of the menu that seem appealing but that can also add up quickly! Instead of filling up on a pricey appetizer, stick to the free basket of bread or chips for the table.
Go for lunch
Opting for a lunch date instead of a dinner trip can save you some pennies. Many lunch menus offer items a la carte that can save $$!
Bring your own bottle
Some restaurants will let you bring your own wine (and maybe charge a small corkage fee). Pick up a bottle from the grocery store and save yourself the pricey restaurant markup.
