There’s something incredible about someone who took a chance on themselves and who seemingly makes “doing it all” appear like just another task on the to-do list. Reeny Holdstein, the owner of Wallpaper Warehouse Interiors in Bradenton, Florida, is just such a woman. We recently caught up with Reeny to learn how she got her start, what she has learned as a female business owner, and how she manages to make running a business look so effortless.
AdvisHer: Tell us about you – who is Reeny Holdstein, and what was your inspiration for starting your business?
Reeny: My husband and I started our retail wallcovering store in 1981. We expanded soon after adding blinds, shutters, and shadings which naturally flowed into design work (i.e. fabrics, draperies, bedding, etc.). The store was originally my husband’s idea, and I jumped in and ran with it! I became a widow at a young age, but owning my own business allowed me the flexibility to raise my daughters. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the gift of loyal staff and installers. They are a reflection of me and I cannot give them enough kudos!
AdvisHer: Take us through a day in the life!
R: It varies every day and every week. The reality of owning your own business is that it is a huge time commitment. It takes time to nurture it, make it thrive, and get the bills paid! As far as a day in the life, every day is different but every day is special. Every client is unique. Every customer has a different request. This keeps it creative, challenging, and fresh!
AdvisHer: What is your favorite type of project to work on? How do you stay inspired?
R: I am mostly a residential decorator. After 38 years in the industry, I’m working with the next generation of loyal customers who are very engaged in technology so home automation/motorized window treatments are also keeping me busy! I stay inspired by all small businesses with great customer service. Creative, diverse, clever, and unique style doesn’t come out of a big box store.
AdvisHer: If you could give your younger self some advice, what would it be?
R: Owning your own business is a different level of responsibility. You’re not just collecting a paycheck. You have to remember to prioritize your family and stop and smell the roses!
AdvisHer: What is your favorite project you’ve worked on?
R: Too many to be specific, but one highlight I actually enjoy daily: the view of the Gulf of Mexico from my clients’ waterfront residences is stunning from every angle.
AdvisHer: How do you prioritize your financial health, and what are your financial goals for 2019?
R: In this day and age, we need to consider our financial health as important as our physical and mental wellbeing. It is so important! As I’m now moving into the later third of my life, I’m continuing to aggressively prepare for retirement someday!
